Classics

Classics refers to the study of the literature, languages, history, and cultures of ancient civilizations, primarily those of Greece and Rome. This field encompasses the examination of classical texts, such as epic poetry, philosophy, drama, and historical writings, as well as the languages in which these works were originally composed—chiefly Greek and Latin. The term also denotes the enduring significance and influence of these ancient works on subsequent literature, art, philosophy, and the intellectual traditions of later societies. The study of Classics aims to understand and appreciate the achievements of these ancient cultures, their societal structures, and their contributions to modern thought and culture. Additionally, the term “Classics” can refer to the canonical works from this period that are considered foundational to the Western literary and intellectual canon.
